The Michigan Association of Planning, with funding assistance from the Michigan Department of Transportation, MOTT, and the Americana Foundation, is leading an effort to establish a model ordinance and guidebook documenting a process for the evaluation of development that may have impacts beyond the municipal boundary in which it is proposed.

The Michigan Development Impact Study (DIS) is being completed based on outcomes and recommendations of the MDOT Transportation Summit (2003) and the Transportation Summit- Land Use Subcommittee (TS-LUS). The Michigan DIS is being guided by a state-wide Advisory Committee and is intended to help improve communication between affected governments and to provide a means of revealing and assessing potential impacts of large-scale developments before conflicts relating to them arise.
